India is the birth place of Chicken Tikka Masala and Curries. Indian foods are prepared with a blend of finely mixed spices quite popular across the region. The spices develop the rich taste in Indian food enough to boggle your mind. The ever-increasing fan base of Indian food around the New York city is steadily increasing because of the large number of Indians who traveled to the land of dreams. The Indians also brought their very own vibrant, colorful, and aromatic authentic dishes for the people in the West. While most of the Indian population is Vegetarian, Indian food is great for people who are looking for vegan or vegetarian food option. If you are a Meat lover, don't get disappointed yet. Indian food also boasts of some popular non-vegetarian dishes too. Few examples are the famous Butter Chicken, Mutton Biryani and Tandoori Chicken are enough to satisfy your taste buds.
Indian food has gained reputation all over the world especially in the United States. You can find many places serving the appetizing Indian food across all major cities in the US. India is a diverse country with different food culture originated from different parts of the country. While the Northern region boasts tandoori dishes and korma offering royal taste, the Western Ghats offers sea foods that is made in naturally sweet tender coconut milk. The South Indian food servers a quality of different dishes made from rice accompanied with spicy chutneys, curries and famous sambhar. Also, the Indian sweets are a delight to relish. If you ever want to have a burst of sugar syrup in mouth, don't forget to try few Bengali Sweets. Be it spicy, tangy, or sweet flavor, you can find everything in the Indian cuisine. Be assured that the melody of spices will surely bring delight to you.

Mediocre buffet style restaurant. Nothing original or spectacular in neither taste nor presentation. The naan is not good, and when naan is not good at an Indian restaurant then that restaurant is not worth going to. Basically a 2.5 star restaurant. So why only 1 star... Well, I have been contributing to YELP! for almost a year and have taken the time to write thorough and honest reviews of all the restaurants that I've been to. I write these reviews so people don't waste time with bad restaurants. I also write these reviews in hopes that owners see them and get an honest idea of what a consumer thinks... whether good or bad. I also appreciate other peoples honest reviews of restaurants and often use YELP! to help me find my next favorite eatery. The point of all this is that I loathe the fact that the owners or friends of the owners of this restaurant keep posting fake 5-star reviews of this place. Even worse is that they keep writing fake 1-star reviews of their nearest competitor. They pay money to advertise on YELP! and then ruin the sites integrity by posting all these fake reviews. Now, I'm not naive enough to think that they are the only ones that try to build up their rating with fake reviews, but trashing someone else just because they are trying to compete is sad. And by the way, Kasa blows this place out of the water by offering a unique spin on Indian food with GREAT service, delicious food created by a very talented Chef and a very clean space.

Let me start out by saying I'm not a huge fan of Indian food but I like this place....great NAN bread and great Chicken Tikka Masala.....reasonable pricing..........I haven't tried the lunch specials but I always get the food for take out....

i got delivery for lunch - was fast the chicken tikki is not good the saag aloo was amazing

Bombay say they're the "best Indian food in the Castro," and despite the fact that they're the ONLY Indian food in the Castro, this statement is still false. You could get better Indian food at McDonalds. Even the occasional sub-standard masala or korma wouldn't be the end of the world, but the staff and service are indifferent, rude and unfriendly. We went into the restaurant around 5pm one night to grab a bite (after promising myself I'd never do it again) before a movie. Our friend who had just eaten was with us and despite the fact that we were the only people in the entire restaurant, the waiter would not serve us unless our friend observed the $8 per person minimum. No wonder the place was empty. Blech!

If I were writing a review on just the restaurant I would give it three stars. But since you can order delivery online they get an extra star. The food is pretty good. I really like their Banghan Barta (not sure how to spell it!) The food seems to be hit or miss depending on the night you order it. I always order the same thing and sometimes it's phenomenal and other times it's embarrassing. I suggest ordering delivery to avoid the not so great service. But if you do go in they always have "Buy one vegetarian dish get the second free".

So i went there last night for the first time, Its pretty nice! I loved the music that they played...it was so much fun. The chicken tikka kebob is so amzingly good, its over a bed of onions and green peppers, omg it's so yummy and it comes with plain nan so you dont have to order extra! yay! My friend had the butter chicken and the sauce was so yummy. The samosas are pretty good, we had the veggie one, it was a little bland just because I'm use to the meat ones, but with the red sweet sauce mmmmmhmmm thank you very much. The only thing that I wasnt pleased with was the portion sizes, the portions are so huge that two people could share. The average entree is about ten bucks and then you have to add lke rice and stuff on top...not bad

You can get better food elsewhere... it's too bad the castro doesn't have more Indian restaurants...so if you are craving Indian food...and you don't want to leave the castro...you are stuck with this one... but mission is not too far of a walk ;) Video Restaurant Review of Bombay Indian: youtube.com/watch?v=GZsz…

3 stars only because this one LOVES the indian food - so when its not that great its still pretty damn good. ok - I ordered the 2 standard dishes I always order: chicken tikki masala, and the sag paneer (the spinach and cheese dish). We got soup too since we got the early bird special and the soup was ok if you like lentils. Anyhow the sag paneer was good - but it always is - and it wasnt the best I've ever had. The chicken was tough - there is nothing I hate more than not tender overcooked chicken. Also the sauce was thin - chicken tiki masala should be a thick sauce. the naan was naan - what can I say. There was only one kind and I like having a choice.

Every time I come into the city to stay I order from Bombay for delivery. They good menu, friendly and delivery quickly and it is always warm. All their chicken dishes are made with white meat and are excellent. I am also impressed by the Nan as well. If you are looking for a very good Indian restaurant at a good price I would recommend Bombay
(4)Candice M.
The indian food here is good. The samosas are great. The nan is excellent. The service is o-kay, nothing extraordinary here. Whenever I go, the plates always come out in time and I've never had any problems. I love Indian food and this is one of the places I think of especially since I hang out in this area quite a bit. I love the paintings on the wall. It makes me feel like I'm in some Tantric Temple or something. Its pretty dark in here but has a mysterious feel to it.
(4)jen b.
The butter chicken and vegetable tikki masala are great! (the sauce is the same for both dishes). oh! and the prawn vindaloo was quite tastey. i had to soak up all the extra sauce with my naan. the vegetable samosas are not that great. it kind of tasted like there was egg in it. i've definitely had better. (the downtown oakland farmer's market sells samosas that taste better) the service was good.

First off, we always joke that it's the best Indian in the Castro since it's the *only* Indian restaurant in the Castro. This place is really good. I've never had a bad meal here. We get the vegitarian dishes so we get a discount which we make up for in some large Flying Horse beers. The wait staff is always attentive and I never have to wait for another beer or a refill on the water. No matter who is your waiter, everyone will help you. We always seem to get a window seat and has one of the best people watching locations for a restaturant. After being told how good Indian Oven is compared to Bombay, we tried it out but after waiting super long for a table, being shoved into a corner, and having bad food and service, we vowed to never cheat on Bombay ever again. Not the best but really good Indian comfort food in a great location, good prices, and good service.

This is the only restaurant that threatens Himalayas in Boulder Co in my opinion, may be even better sometimes. I got married in San Fran last year and we had Bombay cater, it was an absolute knock out with our guests, they continue to ask me for the restaurant info when in the area. Delicious Saag and Matar paneer!
(5)Liz S.
Like the temperature of my food, I am lukewarm on the lunch buffet. The dishes had good flavor, but they were not anywhere near hot. Disappointing. However, we have been going to Bombay for several years and still get takeout occasionally. The Chicken Malligawtani Soup is one of my favorites in the city - creamy, lemony, with small bits of chicken and nicely spiced. It's Malligawtani Soup for the Soul, if your soul craves a bit of Northern Indian spice. Other favorite dishes: Chicken Tika Masala - buttery Navratan (Vegetable) Korma - creamy Chana Masala (Chickpeas) - tangy (much better than at India Clay Oven) Murgh Kali Mirsch (Tandoori Chicken) - moist and tender Despite the lackluster buffet, made even less appealing by the fact that many of the dishes lacked spice (but not flavor), I will still get takeout from Bombay. We got catering from them a few years ago for a party, and they did a fabulous job - would do so again. EDIT 2/27: We got takeout here last night, and it was really good. Tangy Chicken Tika Masala, creamy Saag Paneer, savory Samosas. The restaurant was absolutely dead but they seemed to be doing some delivery business. The food was realyy good - why only for take-out? I don't understand why there is such a huge difference between dining in and dining out.
(3)Sylvia C.
Their food is pretty good. Especially if you like the whitey creation of chicken tikka masala because they do a pretty good job with that one. Also, if you like delivery and hate talking to people on the phone, then you'll especially love this place because you can order over the internet. Yes, that's right folks, you can cater to your anti-social, CTM-eating, sit on your couch and get indian food delivered ways if you order from Bombay Indian. As a side note, I eat at this place about once every 1-2 weeks. yup.
(4)Matthew K.
Great tikka masala. Super fast delivery! I order from here at least once a month.
(4)d l.
Had the lunch buffet for $7.95 which is very reasonable for the location . The tikka masala is average and i would say just about the whole buffet is not bad considering the price . the naan was good and the rice pudding as well . You get what you pay for
(3)Lindsay D.
We came here last night, I was starving and we were lured by the sign out front that boasted 2 for 1 vegetarian dinner specials. I had the mushroom matter, he had the sag paneer. I'm not crazy about indian food (okay, I'm actually a huge pansy for anything remotely spicy), but I had enough water to enjoy my meal. The portions were small and we were upcharged for a small plate of saffron rice after ordering some garlic nan. I don't know how you could eat the food without one of those sides anyway so i was really surprised that neither came with the meal. Overall, it was tasty and filling but, if it weren't for the dinner special, it would have been far too expensive for what we received. $9 for just a small bowl of creamy mushrooms is just unacceptable. It should at least include some plain rice.

It's odd to me that my first review of an Indian restaurant would be a bad one considering all the great experiences I've had with other Indian restaurants in the city, but as they say -- a bad experience normally sticks out more than a good one. And with Bombay, that adage holds true. I've been to Bombay a few times. The food is OK, nothing memorable. I would say that for the quality of it's food, it's way-overpriced. The place was unbearably hot two of the times I was there and the service wasn't great, nor good, in fact it's below-average the few times I was there, but I am not a stickler for service -- as you can tell by my other reviews. On the other hand, I hate being given an attitude. The owner nickel-and-dimed me for what I thought was a free appetizer and he gave me a huge attitude when I asked about the discrepancy. I find that type of behaviour unacceptable especially when I asked nicely. I would definitely put Bombay on the low end of the Indian restaurants I have been to in San Francisco (I've been to over 25 in the city). It's unfortunate because it's the only Indian joint in the castro and the closest to my place. Oh well. I gave it one star for the simple fact that the food is ok. If you're near Bombay, craving Indian and don't mind walking 5 more minutes; move up the street to Maharaja, Al Hamra or Pakwan in the mission.
(1)John C.
Start with two stars for being a generic Indian restaurant, with a menu with everything you'd generally expect for North Indian cuisine. Add a star for having pretty good dinner entrees (we ordered spinach with garbanzo beans, a GREAT eggplant dish, and lamb in tomato sauce) and timely service. Add another big star for having a 2-for-1 vegetarian dinner special and EXCELLENT vegetable samosas.
(4)Miriam W.
Mediocre lunch buffet.
(3)Kenny G.
At long last, a recently priced buffet ($7.95) with a nice variety of vegetarian and non-vegetarian selections. The kind folks here at Bombay have a dish that resembles Saag Paneer, but instead of cheese cubes, has garbanzo beans. I almost brought the entire tray to my table...so good!!! Been here several times and the food is constantly being rotated and refilled. Yes.
(3)Stumbalina b.
Lots of delious options, order & pay online, reliable delivery, excellent prices and an early bird's special! I've tried the delivery many times, so I am speaking from experience, not just a one-time drop-in to the buffet. I'd like to try to dine-in sometime, but I'm too lazy and I'm too weighed down by all this ghee I'm eating. Keep it comin'!
(4)Storm W.
I dropped in for an early buffet lunch and the food was good and the atmosphere typically Indian. The variety of items on the buffet seemed limited with not a lot of veggie dishes. But what was there was good and tasty.
(3)Marie K.
With all of the reasonably priced Indian / Pakistani restaurants in SF (Pakwan, Shalimar, Naan-and-Curry), Bombay Indian Restaurant is not somewhere that I feel the need to return to. I love Saag/Palak Paneer and it was pretty terrible and tasted like butter. In fact, everything tasted like butter , which is not what I expected from Indian food. The rice was also flavorless and the chicken curry was mediocre.
(2)Stephen S.
Ummm. Yay! Now, I loves me my indian food. Yummy, yum, yum. But finding someplace that's not ridonculously expensive, has decent food and has delivery can be somewhat of a challenge. Well, Bombay met that challenge and came through fairly well. Yummy, quick delivery, ok on pricing. There was a bit too much oil used in cooking but other than that I think I've found my new fave.
(4)Peter O.
Really good Indian food. My sweetie and I are regular customers with Bombay Indian because of their quality, their prices, and the fact you can order online and schedule your delivery ahead of time. Perfect for us crazy theatrical types! Try their Kashmiri Naan. Their Mattar Paneer is exellent too!
(5)rich l.
Food was ok. Beware if you order delivery. Took 1h 10m to get our food.
(2)Kevin S.
Ok 5 stars cuz the food is so delicious and even better because it's in the castro! How fun is that! This is def my fav spot for indian food in the city. Went here last night with 3 friends and we had a feast! Check it out

Last night my palate just wanted to have a flavorful dinner. I was not originally interested in Indian food, but Bombay is just down the street and it was a cold and windy night on Market St. Vegetarian Samosa: Too big, dry, luke warm Mulligawtawny Soup: Spicy, Flavorful, good amount of chicken, but lost the lemony flavor described on the menu. Garlic Nan: Right amount of garlic, warm, good portion Tandori Shrimp: Came steaming to the table, good portion of shrimp, salty flavor of the shrimp mixed well with the sweet flavors of the green pepper and onion. Chicken Vindalo: Warm, flavorful, small portion Service: Good, but difficult to understand my server Overall, I was happy with the service and was given the flavorful meal that I was seeking.
(3)Carolyn T.
Ordered this through Waiters on Wheels. ~ Assorted Tandoori hors d'oeuvres for two: An aluminum packet of assorted cut chicken bits with a at least one drumstrick and thigh and a plentitude of onions and green bell peppers. Nice. ~Mushroom Mattar: Really, really nice version - very rich and creamy with just enough spice. ~Sag Paneer: Not enough cheese and a layer of oil/grease on the top. A bit more cilantro flavor than I like and the oily consistency was a bit of a turn off. ~Lamb Vindaloo: Can't comment - the dish is ordered for my BF who likes it really spicy. He's happy with it with the exception of it not being spicy enough for him (but too spicy for me). ~Lamb Biryani: For me -- great gamey flavor on the lamb and moist rice with enough carrot bits to make it substantial. ~Naan: Two pieces. A bit on the wilted side but that happens when it is wrapped in foil. ~ Gulab Jamun: Obviously fresh and well-made. Nice cardamom flavor. On the upside for this particular order -- the order was placed at about 6:30 and we were told an hour and 15 minutes. It arrived within an hour and EVERYTHING was hot. For a change, not a single dish needed to be re-heated. Also, crediting Bombay, there was a plethora of additional sauces provided; yogurt-based, cilantro-based, and a tamarind sauce. Nice touch. With the exception of the Sag Paneer, I would order everything again.
(4)Michael D.
I'd want to put the stars between 3 and 4 if I could but I think I'm closer to 3. Their Naan is great and they have a nice deal for lunch/dinner (linner?) between 3 and 5 where you can get a chicken/veg/ or lamb plate with soup and rice or naan for under 10 bucks. Their lunch buffet can be a little overcooked, but tasty. Their dinner can be a little crowded and noisy. But for those days when you have a craving for cheap rib sticking Indian food I recommend Bombay Indian Restaurant.
(3)Shannon B.
Yummy and fast. Convenient location and nicely priced wines.
(4)Miss Lili F.
terrific, chewy, warm, buttery (but not greasy) NAAN!!! good curries... slightly on the salty side, but just makes you eat more NAAN!!! galub jaman...little balls swimming in sugar syrup... interesting. too bad it wasnt NAAN!!! service was pretty good, bringing me more and more NAAN!!!
(4)Pan K.
For dullish, poorly prepared food in a lush but (look closely) tacky setting, nothing beats this restaurant. Bland, uninspired hash that looks better on plates and tablecloth but not tastier( no, dear foodie, we don't eat with our eyes). Also, given their miserable portions, the fixed menu is hardly a deal. We left the place hungry and deeply, profoundly, bottomlessly unimpressed. There are many better deals around, at lower prices, with less pretentious decor. Go there and let this place figure out how to make real Indian food..in silence.
(1)Gary G.
I tried to order a pretty standard curry, rice & nan on their web site. It told me that, "your $18.28 order does not meet the $18.30 minimum". Given that my order was probably the standard combo, it's clear they set it up like that. That's so cheap and I'm happy to avoid their business as a result.
(1)Toby V.
The previous reviewer seems to have only tried the lunch buffet. I've been here for dinner, where the food is cooked-to-order, and thought the food was great (granted I'm no foodie) and the hip Indian techno-grooves added some great ambiance. I also went today for the lunch buffet for the first time. It was tasty and appetizing (again, I'm not a foodie) but not what you would call hot off the grill. Whaddya want for a $6.95 all-you-can eat? I felt like I got my money's worth. I will definitely go back for dinner, and I would probably go back for lunch someday (not soon) if I'm home (I live in the neighborhood) with a daytime hankering for Indian food. I remember that Indian lunch buffet on Folsom near 8th or 9th being better (and a little more expensive).
(3)Jessica G.
I have now realized that the only place to get good Indian food in the Castro is at Bombay. I am a big fan of their Sag Aloo, the spinach is just the best I have had in a long time. I get both delivery and eat in, both experiences have been great. I feel like the Castro is full of Thai and Sushi restaurants and Bombay breaks up the mundane food experience with a good, spicy treat.
(4)Joe R.
The free papadums were good and the pakora/samosa appetizer was decent (i guess it's hard to mess up deep fried batter) but everything went down hill from there. The curries were awful... totally uninspired (no flavor or spice) and worst of all they were cold! I'm at home now and my girlfriend is feeling sick to her stomach. We'll never go back.
(2)Pug P.
Only ever done delivery, great chicken tikka masala, their samosa's my husband loves. Great lamb vindaloo too. The only thing is that when ever we order just that, somehow we spend like 50.00 on delivery! They also have a 2.00 off delivery on their menu, which is decent. I do love their food though, spicyness and all
(4)M L.
This place is consistent and the food is cooked to order. I usually order for delivery and I never wait more than 30 min. If I order SPICY..thats how it comes. I've been ordering from Bombay for almost ten years and love it!
(5)Joseph R.
I'm really thrown by the number of lackluster reviews here. My friends and I have a longstanding tradition of eating here fairly regularly, and though I've tried many other Indian places, the lunch buffet here is tops. In fact, I think it's tops in all buffet cuisines. The service is very friendly. The guys are always affably chatty when you go up to the buffet, which always has some wonderful selections, by the way. One caveat is the weird propensity for certain servers to hit on my female friends. We always leave each situation feeling amused, but it is kind of weird to be bothered with that sort of thing when you're grabbing lunch. And it seems to be a characteristic unique to this establishment. Still, we are unable to ignore the siren song of those fantastic desserts, the best compared to all the other Indian places that have crossed our palates.
(4)Tyler S.
They don't do real desi-style Indian here, but I'm relatively happy with the Americanized approximations. Last night our lamb korma and lamb in coconut curry hit the spot. The spice level was low, but since it was a lazy Sunday night, that's what we wanted. The mango lassi's were a little below average. I think the naan is unremarkable. Maybe a little soggy if I'm being really critical. We couldn't decide how cute the young waiter in the American flag tie and wide bellbottoms was. Too angular? Just enough tumeric?
(3)Dana L.
Good food, and the service was pretty good as well. The samosas (both veggie and meat were cooked and spiced perfectly), and the chicken and lamb dishes were delicious. The nan was also very good - just the right mix of spices to bread. There was no wait on a Saturday, and the decor wasn't bad. They had some interesting artwork on the walls (we spent a while trying to decipher a particularly interesting cave painting). The waiters gave us some tips about travelling in India. It came out to about $15 a person for a fair amount of food, so it was a pretty good deal.
(4)Rich S.
I've eaten here once and had take out and delivery maybe 5-6 times. It's a pretty reliable place with some ups and downs on the menue. They don't have the chicken makhni on the menu - but they will make it if you order it (and it's pretty good). The butter chicken is also pretty decent. Their kheer is oddly watery and doesn't do much for me and their naan is a bit too soggy. Bottom Line: learn what they are good at and stick with it when you get that I-need-Indian-food-delivered-now craving.
(3)Susan S.
4 stars for awesome samosas. I've been here a lot because of the convenient location, and I've never had a bad experience. And, because I'm a freak, I loathe onions with an obsessive passion. I've looked all over the city for good samosas that don't have big chunky pieces of onion lurking inside, waiting for me to bite into them and make me cringe with disgust. Some of the dishes are better than others, but they are really good about spiciness. You get what you ask for!
(4)Katie P.
Really good somasas. The tikki masala was also really good - the portion size is perfect to split between two people. The naan also good, but a little salty and a little to crispy on top. The ambiance is kind of fun - a little cheesy but darkly lit and they are good about accommodating large groups. Surprisingly a good selection of wine to compliment the menu.
(3)Vivian Y.
food was not good! of course, i should have known because right when i was about to order, i heard the couple next to me complain about how the different curries tasted the same. the side order of rice was rice with tiny particles of nasty in there. if you don't like funny-tasting stuff, don't get that rice. speaking of nasty-tasting stuff... don't get their "dessert-by-the-toothpicks"... yeah, that was pretty much the same thing that was in the rice, but not charred black. service was so-so. overall, i don't recommend it.
(1)Edward K.
Ordered for delivery. It came fast enough, but the good stopped there. The nan was soggy and tasteless, the sauces for the curry and tikka were bland goop, and Stouffers creamed spinach gives a better imitation of saag. That's it for this place.
(2)Sujeeth U.
Their veggie items really have veggies in them. That's what I love about this place! They put cauliflower and bell peppers and carrots... yippee! In some other places, a veggie dish is just mostly onions. I also love their veggie biryani. Food has a good aromatic quality. Decent food, on the slightly expensive side. $25 for 2 dishes. They have sweet Indian people for crew that I sometimes end up chatting with.
(4)carlos f.
Just another restaurant. You can have a lunch buffet for a reasonable price, which wouldn't be worth it paying more. Food is from average to bad. Nothing special there; just a way to have more food available for less money. I just don't know if you will be able to eat much since your apetite will be less once you start eating there.
(2)chris m.
I have eaten here several times now, the most recent being Christmas Day evening. We've always enjoyed the food and the service has never been anything less than good. The decor and vibe of the place are also nice. We tried a plate that was made up of eggplant & potatoes cooked with spices. Just delicious. Another great dish was the eggplant with onions, tomatoes, and boneless chicken. Love the potato nan bread too, and the vegetable samosas. mmmm-MMMM. Only drawback is that the restroom is borderline skanky.
(4)Jelly G.
Lunch buffet is the bomb! Great price and good food.
(4)Tom H.
Decent Indian food in the Castro. Had dinner here after a long day of exploring SF. Food was reasonably priced and very tasty. Nan was especially fresh and perfectly cooked. Portions are a bit small, so order a extra dish or two to share.
(3)D M.
The food here was average. The service was better than the food. This is a place to go if you just want to eat. It is not really cheap either, about $20 when I was there by myself. There may be better values around, but this is the only Indian Restaurant in the hood.
(3)Justin d.
I've eaten Bombay's cooking many times, both in-restaurant and via delivery. They don't have the best North Indian food I've ever had, but I keep coming back for two important reasons: they are consistently pretty good, and I can order online. Some days, I don't want to shout my order over the phone to a distracted employee in a noisy kitchen. Instead, I click a few buttons on my browser and get a nice written record of my order for them to fill. In the more-than-a-dozen times they've delivered to my home, they have always taken about the same amount of time, always made food to specifications, and never made a single mistake. They're not cheap, but they don't skimp on their dishes. I almost always have leftovers enough for another meal (or two!) after they deliver dinner to my house.
(4)C B.
My go to place for Indian food in the castro. Get delivery from here at least once a week. Always fast, always good service, always good quality food.
(3)Mary V.
i think it's pretty good. we usually order takeout, which does take a long time, usually almost an hour, and the food is always a little cold when it arrives. and it's expensive too. and bf always complains of stomach upset. hmmm, maybe i should drop this review to 3 stars? but the food is good! i always get a tandoori leg and the bengan bharta, that delicious eggplant dish with peas in it. yummmmmmy. the saag is good too. so is the biryani - so yum - but way too many carbs/calories for me to enjoy regularly. and this is totally stupid, but i love how they have our info in their system so i don't have to repeat my address and the cross street and yes it's a house every time i call. i hate that.
(4)Annie B.
I like the food a lot. Especially the Paneer Korma. The waiters have always been nice...
(4)James H.
Good consistent food and they DELIVER. They always deliver ahead of the estimate which is nice and the food is warm and consistently good. I am a foodie and if you want some spectacular Indian food you have to get off your butt and go out. If you want a nice movie night at home with some good Indian food this is the place. Vegie samosas, nans, chicken korma and chicken vindaloo are all good. rest is hit or miss
(3)angela k.
I've only eaten at this restauarant a few times, but I regularly get delivery from there. It sometimes takes up to an hour, but the website is set up so conveniently that you can pay by card on line and even dictate what degree of spiciness you want for each dish.

A fun little Indian restaurant with perfectly good curry and naan. It's not going to change your life or anything, and it's not as good as curry in London, but it's not too expensive and the portions were pretty good. I got a $5 discount I'm not sure why, maybe it was because we were there at 7pm?
(3)Gourmet G.
The lunch buffet was decent, although there wasn't much of a distinct difference in the flavors of the various dishes to make any one of them particularly memorable. Neither the friendly service nor pleasant decor compensated for the average food enough to inspire me to return for a second visit.
(3)MeatMaster X.
Utilitarian indian food. They deliver, and that's good. The food is fair. Not the best, but they have a lot of dishes and it gets to you quickly enough.
(3)Mazi S.
Being as lazy as I am, I've now had the lunch buffet here three times since it was about half a block from my old place and three blocks from me new one. After each bad experience, I've taken a look at the buffet walking around for lunch and since it was different items, I decided to give it another go. However, it had amazed me at its suckiness every time. As much as I try to repress my dirty south roots, you can't fuck with the Indian lunch buffets down there.
(1)Anna D.
Yum I love this place! The buffet is a great value and always delicious. It's also great for vegetarian's because there's a lot of veggie options. The dessert is also sooooo good, I love the rice pudding and those cheese ball things. There's naan and salad included too, you really can't beat it.
(5)Steve S.
perfectly decent, but unspectacular indian food. i've only eaten at the restaurant only once, but i order out from here all the time. getting indian food delivered can be a chore, and this place is by far the most reliable spot that delivers indian food to the mission
(3)Tim B.
The key to this place is delivery. The butter chicken is awesome! You order online and the food magically appears, quicker than they say it will. But don't go there without reading all the reviews about the service: there's a reason I pay to not have to deal with the waiters. And the lunch buffet is horrific.
(4)Carolyn B.
i will say that i am NOT that experienced when it comes to indian food, but i thought this place was really good. its not fancy in any way so dont expect that. but it wasnt too crowded, the service was good and prompt, and the food was delicious. i had the chicken with spinach (like sag paneer, but with chicken instead of cheese), my friend had the butter chicken (which he raved about the whole way to the restaurant, it was very good so i can see why), and we also had naan and saffron rice. i really enjoyed everything and would definitely go back!
(4)Adam M.
This place's food is pretty good. Not as good as Kennedy's. Better than Indian Oven (in my opinion, and based on one visit apiece). We went there for dinner. I haven't been for their lunch buffet. The Gaurdian/SF Weekly often has a coupon for a free entree if you spend over $25. I am not sure if it's a coupon or a standing deal but it is worthwhile - you have to make sure they make good on it (they didn't take it off our bill at first).
(4)Sean S.
I have no idea how this place stays open nor any idea why any other yelper likes it. I double step past it the memories are so awful.
(1)Stefan Y.
Bombay Indian on Market is the best we've come across in the city. We order food online from them all the time and have tried just about everything. They have superior service and deliver food promptly and with a good attitude. My wife loves the Krahi Stirfry with prawns and I think the Chicken Makhanwala is orgasmic- you must try it if you love curry.
(5)Vaishali R.
The food is very good. The delivery is usually on time. They have a " buy 1 veg entree and get 1 free" deal which i think is great. The rice pudding(kheer) is awesome. The buffet is great too. i would definitely recommend it......
(4)A G.
This review is strictly for their DELIVERY option - rather LACK there of! If I could give them ZERO star(s), I would. Last night my friend and I were feeling lazy and craving Indian food and since this place is so close to my house, we figured we'd order delivery from them. First we submitted our order on line (around 7:15ish) and as the website stated, they would call w/in 10-15 min after our order was submitted. They called within the next 5 minutes (sounds promising), confirmed our order and informed us that it would take approx 35-45 min to get our order. An hour passes and we decided to call them since my friend was ready to chew off her arm. They were very polite and reassured us that the food will be here any minute. An hour and a half later we called because 20 minutes had passed and we still have not received our delivery. The person on the other line was surprisingly cheerful, yet unapologetic a) either did not care or b) completely clueless (most likely) about our disgruntled (but not rude) tone once again asking where our food was. Finally 9'o'clock rolled around and the need for food superseded our laziness. We called and canceled our order and got out of the house in search of grub. In short, DO NOT ORDER DELIVERY from this place unless you want to wait 2 hours for your food (that will never arrive, as in our case).
(1)Hella M.
decent. the food is kind of greasy and the nan is dry. still pretty good okay.
(3)James J.
i don't think this place is as bad as some of the reviews on here, but i will say that they are a tad pricey. i got the coconut chicken, vegetable curry, plain naan (they don't have garlic naan, why??), some veggie samosas. this all cost my $26?? yeah, a little pricey, but it's decent. my dishes could have been a little bit more spicey though. i'll probably get take out once in a while when i'm craving indian. it's conveniently located - right around the corner from me.
(3)Adrienne Y.
the food is alright, but their business is a little weird. first time i was there, i was with a group of three and things were great. they always have a sign that advertises a two-for-one vegetarian entree dinner special. what they don't tell you on the sign is that you need to spend at least $25 in order to get this deal. that doesn't really work out for a party of 2, so we decided to get just one entree. the server still brought out two entrees and an order of naan which we didn't order...which we promptly informed them of. after a little, um, discussion, they credited our bill with one entree but still charged us for the naan. not so cool. UPDATE: so i walked by the sign the other day and on the bottom in little writing, it says: minimum $25. not sure if it was there before, but it's there now.
(2)dawn w.
Wow went there last week what a disappointment! The samosa's arrived with wilted lettuce in between & no spices in the meat & the Lamb curry was sooooooooooooooooooo overcooked you couldn't chew it! Will not be back.
(2)Francisco J. R.
I have ben there exactly twice for their lunch buffet. The first time the manager was looking at me angrily while I was serving myself because I was grabbing a lot of meat (I was at a low carb diet at the time). When I went to pay, he told me the minimum charge on a credit card was ten dollars. I didn't have any cash on me, so I paid it. I decided to give him another chance, and came back a week later or so. The manager was still looking at me angrily, and told told me again that the minimun charge was ten dollars. "That's alright, I'll pay with cash," I said. He then told me I could only serve myself twice. What the ...! Wasn't this an "all you can eat" buffet? After my three plates of food, I paid and never came back there again. There are many Hindi restaurants at Filmore Street. If I ever want to eat Hindi food, I will gladly go to any of these restaurants instead, because I will never go to Bombay again.
(1)Lucas M.
We order from here quite a lot from Waiters on Wheels and have eaten at the restaurant a few times as well. Very good quality Indian food for a reaonsable price, always consistent and pleasantly predictable. Portions are good size and the spice level always seems to be just right.
(3)Debbie A.
As good as Indian Oven, without the wait. The naan and tandoori are delicious and the bengan bhartha is a personal favorite. The atmosphere is fairly nice, and if you're a booth fanatic, you're in luck. Best of all - they deliver for free ($15 min.) and you can even order online if you're really that lazy or anti-social.
(4)Amme P.
Thoroughly satisfying. It was so satisfying last night that this morning I don't think I ever want to eat again.
(3)J P.
As an introduction to Indian food this place was pretty good. I tried the Bengan Bhartha, Chicken Makhanwala, Samosa Vegetable, and Matter Paneer. The Samosa was really good, with distinct flavors and fun texture nicely complimented by the green sauce (one of three) tableside. The chicken was really good too, in a creamy orange sauce that wasn't as thick or heavy as it looked, and didn't overpower the other flavors. Overall the dishes were well done with nothing overly mushy, soggy or crunchy. However, everything was a bit one dimensional - except the occasional delayed spice taste which was nice.
(4)celeste y.
i love them i just had dinner there and it was great..... everyone is sooo friendly and gorgeous surroundings... love love love... it....
(5)Joanna S.
I would rate the food in this place as 3 stars, but the service was excellent, which has boosted this rating up to 4 stars. The waiter was very informative, giving us information on the kama sutra art on the walls and telling us the best places to go in his hometown in India.
(4)Cory K.
the food is mediocre. not bad, but not great. the service is likewise mediocre. however, if you use their web site to place an online order for delivery, make sure you call them to confirm they got the order. we waited an hour before calling them to see where our food was and they still hadn't received the order from their online system even though it said the order was confirmed.
(2)Merri L.
update january 08: i went here a second time yesterday on a sunday evening, after a long time. the menu was ok.. the lassis tasted weird... kind of carbonated, like we were drinking ice cream floats. it was very dark, i could barely read the menu... i did not like how the waiter was too polite. yes, i know that doesn't make any sense. but he repeatedly came over to refill our water, but instead of just filling them, had to interrupt each and every one of us from our conversations to loudy say excuse me! excuse me! water? each and every time. also, it was very hard to get out of them whether things had nuts in it, but that's mostly that language barrier again. i had a lamb ginger/onion dish which was eh. 2 friends had lamb korma which they liked. one had lamb masala which he thought was ok. and the other had soup which was ok again. it was overall just ok. it might be another year and a half before i come here again. the funny thing was that our convesation scared away some woman reading a book. how she was reading in the dark i dont know, but she certainly hated our conversation lol. Original october 06: Last night we tried to go shopping, but ended up hungry instead, so we stopped into the Bombay Indian restaurant. I've walked past that place tons of times so it was good to finally go in. when we got there around quarter of six, we were the only customers, but an hour later when we left, a couple of people had come in. the best thing about this place is the special, which seems to always be in effect. If you buy one vegetarian dish, you get the second free, as long as you spend $25 at the table. The veggie dishes range from $8-9, so that's a great deal! You do have to then get some rice or naan or something but still.. I got the saag paneer, because I felt like something familiar. It was good. My friend got the mushroom cauliflower dish which was tasty as well (but I liked mine better). My other friend got one of the two combo dishes. I love when places have those, you get a little of a bunch of stuff. it was the best tasting, though was a bit more expensive, around $15ish I believe. The worst thing about the restaurant was the language barrier. Our waitress didn't speak english very well so when my friend asked if anything in the combo had nuts, she said no. The rice came strewn with cashews, which he is allergic to (me too, actually). Good thing I had ordered plain rice instead of the pilaf that came with that meal. The mango lassis were good, and the dessert of those fried balls in syrup tasted like alcohol, but not in a good way. Then again, I've never liked that dessert. This is a decent place, good if you're on a budget, but I'm still going to be on the lookout for a better Indian restaurant.
(3)Sofia R.
I've been here twice in my life. Both times were good experiences. My last visit was last Thursday. Some friends and I were starving after a day out so we decided to eat here. We all split our own meals with each other, kind of. I split medium spiced chicken curry, saffron rice, and assorted naan with my roommate. My friends split vegetarian curry, regular rice, and assorted naan for themselves. I ordered a mango lassi for myself and another friend ordered some sort of non-alcoholic beer, lentil soup, and vegetable samusas for himself. When we were settled in, we were given papadams to enjoy. They're very chip like. I ate them with the sauce they provided on the table. Very addicting. The veggie samusas were good. It's like having spicy mashed potatoes in a puff. My mango lassi was thick, tart, sweet, and refreshing. Wonderful drink if you're planning to eat spicy Indian food! Non-alcoholic beer was actually kind of good too...but I would prefer to have alcoholic beer. Chicken curry was pretty good. The chicken was juicy and tender. And I loved dipping the naans in the curry! Saffron rice was good. Nice spice flavor though I wish there was more to it. I appreciated the added textures from the nuts. The naans were good. I feel like I've had better naan before, but I liked eating them anyway. My favorite in the basket was probably the onion one. There was a lot of naan in this basket so my roommate and I had to take our leftover naan home. Delicious meal.
(4)Daniel P.
If you're visiting the Castro Neighborhood, or just need an Indian Food Fix - I recommend the $9.95 Lunch Buffet (11:30am-3pm)....and it comes with Fresh Naan, Mango Lassi and Chai Tea :)
(5)Ryan O.
When high quality food and ambience come together it's a beautiful thing .... Onion kulcha is some of the best I've had, go with the tandoori chicken (mild spices) if your unsure about what to order as you will not regret it/people pleaser!! Nothing better than a family run business in my opinion, the service is 5 stars --- I just wish I had the $ to eat here all the time. Great folks, come by and check them out! Love the artwork inside and out, kamasutra images throughout make it feel very authentic - so happy to find this place Upper market
(5)Kathy M.
I've eaten at this place several times for dinner and once for buffet. I think the food is reasonable and the service is great. Maybe one time the food took a while, but otherwise I haven't had any problems. I always order my favorite, Kashmiri naan. I tried a few other highly rated Indian places which disappointed in food and service, which I think is a growing trend in the city lately. This place is more traditional and I think it's underrated for what it is.
(4)Steve A.
It'll do in a pinch. The food is good, but nothing to brag home about. Came here for dinner with a yelp deal and it was a fun new place to try out. The service is actually pretty good and the location is incredible.
(3)Gaurav A.
I tried the lunch buffet for $9.95. Good deal for the price, but nothing earth shattering. I have had better Indian food at many other bay area restaurants. The host was very friendly though.
(3)D R.
I have always been an admirer of the Punjabi style of cooking. This place has a wonderful grasp of the style of Punjab and all the wonderful flavors that come alive in your mouth with Punjabi style cooking that I love so much. I haven't tried the lunch buffet yet, I've only done a la cart dinners, however if lunch buffet is any reflection on the dinners then, the food is wonderful. I will update this when I come back to visit for lunch buffet. Anyone care to join me?
(4)Tania R.
Went here for a celebration dinner a week ago. The menu is standard North Indian cuisine. The food was flavorful and fresh tasting, not overly sauce-laden, oily, etc. My bro, bro-in-law and I are all vegetarians so the fact that there are many veggie options on the menu is highly appealing. The 4th party at our table seemed very happy with his chicken tikka masala. The atmosphere is casual and comfortable, and the service is attentive and friendly. I look forward to returning.
(4)Oliver K.
So let me start by saying their lunch buffet is great for the price. Food is tasty and fresh. Where they lose 2 stars is customer service. I have been to this establishment multiple times and the employs are very rude and unhelpful. I called in an order Today, I eventually hung up because of how rude the employee on the other end was. Great food terrible attitude! Try smiling
(3)Eric D.
I ate here a long time ago, but I was shocked at the food. The chicken tikka masala tasted like ketchup. The lentil soup was watery. I looked at the other diners in the restaurant and was surprised anyone would eat here with Curry Boyz and Indian Oven so close by. I hate giving negative reviews, but I've been giving this review to my friends for a while, so it's not something I'm shy about.

It's like hanging out in an Indian family kitchen. If that is not familiar for you, I'd recommend ordering the Mild. But if that is the vibe you want to transport yourself from The Castro, you are in the right place. I'm pretty sure money changed hands because I finished my meal, as the staff bet whether I'd send my meal back or finish it. I got the usual questioning glance when I ordered my Lamb Vindaloo, Hot. "Hot...?" Peter asked to confirm. "Hot!" I said with a curt nod that I think tipped Peter off to bet on me finishing instead of returning my dish. Listening to the phone orders I found out Very Hot is an unofficial option too. Though you should probably work your way up from hot because it is plenty spicy, and I consider Jalapeño to be an edible garnish. The Garlic Naan and Vindaloo both had great flavor to go with the heat, and for being on Market the prices were very fair. The service is home style, not fancy, but if you need something, just speak loudly and you'll be heard. I'll be back, and hope Peter lets his money ride on me finishing the Very Hot next time.

My fiance and I have become regulars here on Saturday night. We love it because it's a quaint, authentic experience, and the food is top notch. I brought my friends from India and they also agreed with that statement. It's also a good break from the cliche plethora of expensive, fly by night hipster joints in the mission. Those places come and go like the fads they are. This place has been around for a long time, and there's a good reason for that. Also, the atmosphere is great, and they play good Indian music. If you're dining in, I would recommend the Bombay complete dinner for two and the Tandoori Mixed Grill appetizer. BONUS: You order that and you'll have enough leftovers to feed you and your spouse for lunch and dinner the following day. So you also get a lot of great food for what you pay for!!
(5)Angelique F.
Go here! Go here! Go here! Perfect for date night, family dinner, or lunch with friends. :-) My favorite Indian restaurant in the city! Not all fancy and fake with dishes I have never heard of. All very homely and delicious comfort food that I have grown up eating. SO SO good, I come all the time and get great service and amazing food without fail. The staff is super friendly and helpful. Can't say it enough I LOVE THIS PLACE. :-) go here!
(5)Ambere S.
They have the best Indian buffet it the area! The service is always prompt and friendly and the buffet is well stocked with a variety of dishes to appeal to everyone. Their Makhani is one of the best in town and the price is a STEAL!
(5)Adam H.
This is...not a good restaurant. Yes; the service is OK. The price is fine. The place is OK (although the plastic dishes are super cheap). But none of that matters because the food sucks. I came here for the lunch buffet and it's just not good. It tastes like what would happen if McDonalds were to try to design Indian food by committee, except none of them had been to India or had any idea what the food should taste like. It's just not good. Sorry, Bombay Indian Restaurant.
(1)Ethan B.
Horrible food. Chicken tikki kababs - had no flavor, super bland & they wanted to charge us $6 for masala dipping sauce since the chicken was so bland! We laughed and asked again, but no budging, $6 for curry dipping sauce firm! lol Naan - We were told twice naan would not come with our meal. It was only when we showed the waiter the menu, where it clearly states "comes with naan", that we got our naan. haha. Dal - isn't this supposed to be a bit thick due to the lentils, not watery yellow soup. lol, really? I've never had the buffet, maybe that's good, but Im too turned off to try it now.
(1)Ryan W.
Great food and great service!!! I had them for take out one night and loved it so much I encouraged my partner to go with me to the lunch buffet and I'm so glad we did!!! The chicken in the tikka masala was so tender! Everything was so full of flavor, I was impressed!! I have tried a lot of Indian food in the area and this by far is the best deal in the area for a good lunch buffet! Next time you are out in the Castro area at lunch running errands, stop and sit in the window if the seats are open and enjoy a nice afternoon!!
(5)Tim B.
I've been going here for years, this was one of my favorite Indian restaurants in SF. But recently it's changed - everything is really REALLY bland now. I'm assuming it's changed management or something, but I've been back twice and both times I didn't finish everything and didn't bother taking home the left overs. As exciting as Wonder bread now.
(1)Laura S.
Some of the best Indian food I've ever had! Service was wonderful even though we showed up right before they closed. Great vibe and location too. Definitely check this place out.
(5)Len M.
This is my favorite place for lunch. I come here at least twice a week, sometimes more. They have the best Indian buffet in the city. The nan is always fresh, and it comes with a delicious mango drink if you want too that's amazing. Servers Raj and Peter are extremely friendly and accommodating. The price is unbeatable. And if you think their lunch is great, come back for dinner, which is even better!
(5)Michael B.
Very consistent quality buffet: excellent value. Food is fresh, hot where it should be, decent quality ingredients, good flavors, good tea, quiet, pleasant environment, excellent staff. Quiet enough for conversation. An excellent rainy day brunch.
(4)Sus... B.
The service was very good, and I didn't feel rushed even when I ended up being the last to leave the restaurant. There was a decent beer and wine selection too, and I really appreciated the 3 varieties of chutney to use with abandon, along with the papadam that apparently came with the meal (I had ordered naan as well and was worried I was misunderstood - not the case!). I will say though that if you want it spicy, you're really going to need plenty of that cilantro chutney. I had the chicken korma and was only offered a choice of mild or medium - having been burned before (badumbump) with getting extra spicy elsewhere but fighting off a cold, I knew my tender tongue could only handle so much so I figured I was better off not asking for hot. That was a mistake. It wasn't bad - it was totally edible and I ate the leftovers the next day along with the rice (not included but cheap) and naan (also cheap, and decent), but even after putting a lot of the chutney in there I still was wishing it had a lot more kick. Maybe the tandoori chicken would've been a better choice because of the onions but oh well. All in all, not a bad spot if you're craving Indian food in the Castro, it's just not as spicy as I'd prefer it.
(3)Xue H.
Great tandoori mixed platter. The sausage meat was great and so tender, as was everything else. Whatever lamb curry I had was awesome. Protip: Dip tandoori meats into the leftover curry sauce. Omnom. Keep this a secret. Got this delivered promptly :)
(4)Teal S.
i really enjoy this place. i would consider myself a connoisseur of indian food, being vegan for 6 plus years, and this place is very very high quality of food, HOWEVER, their menu lacks a lot of staple/common indian dishes most other places in SF offer. its always dead empty inside, so i fear that makes ppl think it sucks, but it doesn't, is really delicious well cooked dishes. and my grip about the dishes could just be the veggie section, so who knows. whatever, i still go here all the time. the lunch buffet sucks though, its way too over-oiled and greasy and heavy.
(4)Jeremy C.
Every time walks it look likes the business is has no one in it. Feel bad for them for not having any customers. Sometimes I see one employee is sitting way in the back wall. Especially others businesses near by always. crowed on weekend night.
(1)Paulo K.
Food was ok. Service was kinda lacking. The ambiance was "nhé" at best. Not a waste but I think I won't do it again. Maybe to have the acclaimed Chicken Tikka Masala.
(3)Siddhartha G.
Service: This is for a pickup - I call in at 7pm to order a pickup, and after taking the order, I was told that it would be about 15/20 mins. After 20 mins, I drive down there and had to wait for 25 more mins!! Also, no one would come to talk to me or even offer me to have a seat or get me some water. Food: I got 3 things: 1. Baingan Bharta - this was horrible to look at (nothing close to what it should actually look like), and it was completely tasteless. The only taste I could get was of crunchy onions - no eggplant. 2. Lamb curry - While placing the order, I asked them if it was tomato-based, and he replied with an empathetic "NO", and hence I decided to get it. But it was a tomato-based curry, and almost tasteless except for the chili/black pepper. 3. Chapati - It would be a shale to call it a chapati. It was a tandoori roti. If only they knew the right names of food they were cooking. Overall, a bad experience, and I'm not going back there ever again.
(1)Anthony H.
I went to this restaurant a few days ago with my co-worker and their lunch special was great! You get to choose one item that comes with the soup of the day and either rice or naan for only $8.75. A lot of food and for a really good price! I ordered the Allu Bengan which is eggplant and potatoes cooked with herbs and spices. I ordered it with naan. The soup of the day was a type of lentil soup which was really good. I enjoyed all of the food. There were a couple people there at the same time as us but it was a fairly quiet atmosphere. The server was very kind and always refilled our waters when they were low. The food was great. My co-worker liked all the artwork that they had on their walls. I will definitely go back here for lunch or dinner sometime. =]

This review was drafted on 9/24/2012. I visited Bombay because I had to use an expired Groupon, which I bought because I love Indian food, and this place is just around the corner from where I live. First off, our server was awkward and didn't smile, as if he had more important things to do and we'd interrupted him. Second, he tried to convince us we couldn't use the Groupon's purchase value as a voucher. After several minutes of his own independent investigation, he agreed we could use our $15 balance toward our meal, BUT we had to order off the dinner menu. WTF? When the food finally did arrive (saag paneer + chicken tikka masala), it was a gloopy, unappetizing mess, with very little flavor. I'd previously eaten here when it was a buffet style lunch place. The quality then was much higher. Not sure if the cooks were replaced or what, but whatever we ate on this particular day was definitely not made with love.
(1)Jason B.
Scouting Indian. Not high on the list but an expiring Scoutmob offer got me in. Waiter suggested I go with one of the Chicken Bharta. Only dish on the menu with both eggplant and chicken. It did not disappointed as everything simmered in a tomato sauce with peas and onions. More filling than expected. Not as greasy as expected. Chappati bread (made from whole wheat flour) was a solid complement. Nice if unassuming service. Bit of a tussle at the end as to whether the discount was still valid (it was the last day), but we got through it. Probably wouldn't have been as generous with the stars if I had paid full price. Thanks to Scoutmob I didn't have to.
(3)Josie C.
My favorite Indian Restaurant in the city. My favorite dishes: Paneer Tikka Masala, Bindi (Okra), Channa Masala (Chickpea). My favorite Naans: Garlic and Chili. This place is great!
(5)Brenda I.
Best waitress ever!!! It's a shame I forgot her name but she was really helpful and basically explained everything on the menu ingredient by ingredient. 2 for $25 deal is so worth it you get so much food it should be named 3 for $25. Chicken Curry and Nan was my favorite.
(5)Denny L.
Excellent Indian food and great service. Quiet with a nice view of the Castro neighborhood from the window. Several varieties of Naan and especially enjoyed the Naan stuffed with grilled onions and the Naan stuffed with coconut and cranberries. Good prices too.
(4)Terry C.
We got here a little after 6 and were the only ones in the restaurant; a table or two were occupied while we were there. The food is OK. The Chicken Tikka Masala and Palak Paneer were good. The garlic nan was not. It was really oily and thin, with not much garlic taste at all. The vegetable pakora was over fried so it was dry. We also got a vindaloo with fish of the day (salmon) and it was really fishy. I didn't like that at all. But what urked me the most about this place was when the server brought our food over, his finger was touching the Palak Paneer. UGHHHH
(2)Sylvia L.
We've walked past a few times and my boyfriend isn't big on Indian food (although I've been trying to convert him). We finally came in one night on our quest to try everything within a 3 block radius. The guys at the table next to us told us their food was delicious. I jumped on Yelp, and luckily saw the $10 for $20 deal. However, I also saw the reviews and grew concerned. We got sag paneer, chicken tikka masala, naan, and rice. Everything was Fantastic, especially the chicken tikka masala. It was very flavorful. As for the sag paneer, it wasn't diluted at all and really yummy. I ordered a glass of wine and they were Very generous with the pour (extra little cup on the side).
(4)Tina C.
Not only is their food absolutely delicious (every time we order it's consistently top notch), but their staff is also very helpful. Thank you again Sante ~ great customer service this evening!
(5)Akshay V.
It's just --mediocre-- Consider this coming from the horses mouth, as I am.. From Bombay..
(3)Marie-Clare T.
The best indian food in SF!
(5)Vince C.
i realize this is unfair since its now three years later, but i discovered this saved in my drafts and just thinking of the waitress again instantly brought back the awfulness that is bombay indian restaurant. so.... in 2010 I wrote as follows: Do I need to give a star? NEVER come here. Our food was tasteless! I literally walked out of this place with less taste than I had before ( other than bitter regret.) The service smelled more than the food. Our waitress was quite the unpleasant and forceful server, strongly suggesting that my friend order more soup or salad... awkward. I'm talking intense staring, gritting of teeth and slightly constipated forcefullness. What we did order was boldly bland, and strangely chewy for indian food.. When offered more lentil chips repeatedly we accepted, because they were the least flavorless item and figured we'd get our money back here. However when we got the bill I was surprised to see she had charged us for all but the first order. My friend mentioned it to the server and pointed out she hadn't told us the second ones weren't complimentary. She replied, " that's not my problem.". NEVER come here. However, If you want to chew on textured nothingness and be treated like sh** Bombay is the Indian restauraunt for you :)

Came here to check out their lunch buffet for USD 9.99 + tax. I'm not a big Indian food eater, nor familiar with the dishes, nor like very spicy food. I eat, taste, and decide weather I like it or not. I found the Tandori Chicken have good flavor, dry, not moist, cooked to too high a temperature. I like to cut into my meat and have juices coming out with flavors enticing my tongue for more experience. The meatballs were a bit too salty for my taste. The Chicken Tikka Masala was tasty but a bit on the spicy side. There's a sweet mustard that has a very appealing taste, not knowing what food item to put this on. The rice pudding is very thin, runny, with a taste of unfamiliar flavors that I don't really care for. The Dal was too spicy for me. The Mango Chutney was overly sweet. Then there's a purplish ball of a dessert which I didn't write the name of but I'm guessing from their takeout menu it's Gulab Jamum, cottage cheese ball fried and soaked in a flavored syrup; even though overly sweet from the syrup, found myself strangely drawn to it, taking a bit of it at a time from my friend's dish, again and again, a half teaspoon at a time. I guess I must have liked it a very small quantities. Pleasant atmosphere, but a signal that their food isn't very popular with very few customers when we arrived at 1 PM. While there are a few items that I did like, the overall experience wasn't all that great, my low tolerance of spicy foods, probably won't bother to return. Atmosphere is pleasant, service was good, kept our water glasses filled but not ice cold. The lunch buffet is daily 11:30AM-3PM. Credit cards accepted. Your individual taste results may vary on juiciness or lack of juiciness of your cooked meats, saltiness, spiciness, sweetness tolerances and finally your overall dining experience. Naan 'n Curry on Irving Street offers wider selection of dishes on their lunch buffet, didn't recall a wide intolerance for spicy foods or just avoided them, includes chai on their buffet but not as nice an atmosphere as Bombay Indian Restaurant.

I really like this restaurant and eat lunch here at least twice a month. The food is always fresh and they change up the buffet menu often. The price is reasonable and there is usually always parking on the street. Nice ambiance and authentic food. I totally recommend this place.

While walking through the infamous Castro District in beautiful San Francisco I found this hidden gem! Normally I am one for American style cuisine but occasionally it is fun to try more exotic flavors. No little than a second of entering this building, we were greeted by the wonderful staff and received excellent service throughout the meal. The Chicken Tikki Masala is absolutely delicious along with the large side of rice which was at an additional cost. The only downside was non-refills on drinks but that is a norm in the city. If you're ever near this place, definitely check it out! Bon Appétit! :)

I ordered for delivery tonight in response to a menu hung on my front door offering free delivery and $2.00 off on a purchase of $20 or more. Good food, but ordered a lamb Shahi Korma, which we did not receive. Got a chicken korma instead...not a big issue, as the chicken is probably better for us in the long run, but irritating. So, Bombay Indian, check your outgoing orders more carefully, as we spent over $50 on your food! Jeannie

In the last few years, the price of the all-you-can-eat lunch buffet has crept up dollar by dollar, year by year, and yet the quality of the food or service hasn't gotten any better. The food is (just) OK. The Tandoori Chicken tastes like... plain chicken -- if you blindfolded me and had me eat it, I could tell you that it was chicken, but not Tandoori Chicken specifically. The service today (March 28, 2012) was poor. We walk in -- the place was not crowded, mind you -- and stand there waiting for the guy in the back at the register (who could clearly see us) to at least make the sit-wherever-you-like hand gesture, but he didn't -- for what seemed like a few minutes. I understand that he was doing something, but he could have easily made said gesture. That, plus the fact that my partner's water glass remained empty until he had to ask for it to be refilled, equals poor service. If this place were cheaper, I might go back, but there's much better food to be had for equal or less money.

The food is good. North Indian cuisine. Not much to rave about but it hits the spot if you are in the neighborhood and hungry for soem Indian. I loved my vegetable korma and the garlic naan was moist and yummy too.

Hell Ya!! I ordered take out from here dec. 6. Oh man! It was great! The food was steamy hot, it was creamy, it was almost perfect. I ordered dessert but they had run out so they gave me an other type. How sweet! The delivery guy was nice and kind. No complaints what so ever!!

The $25 for two got me in here for dinner. I left not extremely impressed, but not unsatisfied either. Bombay Indian Restaurant is pretty much your standard Indian restaurant, with the typical offerings, preparations, taste, and price. If you're in the neighborhood and craving Indian, Bombay is a good option. Service was a bit slow, especially considering the restaurant was empty when we were there, but the food warmed us up from the cold temperatures upon arriving. Not at the tippy top of my list, but I'd return.
